Working out how to do that polar video nicely helped me figure out how to do something I'd been working on for a while a couple years ago and never got where I wanted with: visualizations of elliptic curves as complex surfaces.

I went to see if I've talked about elliptic curves before, and I actually talked about this exact issue here. But now I've leveled up in Mathematica so I can do the visuals better.

Oversimplified, an elliptic curve is an equation that looks like y^2 = x^3+ax+b for some integers a and b. And they have lots of interesting number theoretic properties if you look for solutions that are rational numbers, none of which I want to talk about right now.

If you graph these equations over the real numbers you get pictures like one of these two (left: y^2=x^3+7x+1; right: y^2=x^3-7x+1):

And we like to imagine points at infinity in each direction, so the picture on the left looks like one giant circle (going through infinity at the top/bottom), and the picture on the right looks like two disconnected circles. And the difference is basically whether we get one or three solutions to the cubic when we set y equal to zero.

But over the complex numbers they should all look the same. The problem is, graphs of complex functions are four-dimensional and that's hard to display. But in that four-dimensional space, we should get a torus: a circle moved through a circular path (which still includes the point at infinity).

But we can make three-dimensional graphs, and then we can let them vary over time. So here is an animation of y^2=x^3+7x+1, with time controlling the imaginary coordinate of the output:

a lot of things went down and I like to say that but nothing really happened, except for me losing my sanity to trying to set up the fucking neovim+vimtex setup for learning to type in my lesson notes in LaTeX. Like DUDE it was a LUDICROUS pain in the ass. It was so bad. I wish I had linux that was just as compatible as windows.

Anyway, that tuition teacher of mine had asked me to start learning and taking notes in latex instead and that's been my excuse for not really working on my project these 2 days, and man I really do suck.

On the contrary, I have decided to not worry about typing in Latex just yet but typing atleast one lesson throughout the rest of my project in latex. That's the current challenge.

And yeah from today on, I'm doing a minimum of two chapters everyday for the rest of the period or I actually might not make it eek. I thought I'd be done by mid June. It's almost come to an end, this entire summer vacation, and I've only progressed marginally.

On the flip side, I am definitely learning new stuff that would def be helpful for me. Like the entire vim thing or latex or mathematica or linux stuff, this shit should def come in handy. Additionally, I also talked to a senior and one thing is clear, I gotta look into my plans now, so I gotta go and talk to profs for sure, profs I like the vibe of, and ask about what I should do regarding the choice that is coming up in no time. Physically putting myself out of my comfort zone is a sure shot way of being able to put myself to study cause really that's what I really wanna do, everything else is just a bit of a break I want or escapism or, well, tbh some of it is passion as well. Like I don't just play games as a way of escape, I also play them cause I really am rather passionate about the entire idea of it still.

Regardless, I feel a little hopeful about things this sem. I feel my old passion for doing smth in this line reigniting. Not just reigniting but vibrantly ablaze and on an increasing slope.
